large as this longing

I had a blast up north last weekend. God spoke to me in a lot of cool ways. I loved the chance to get away from distractions and just ‘be’. The weather was great! Although 25 below zero (actual overnight) is a little to cold to be going to the bathroom in an outhouse. Brrrr!

Here are some pictures. It wouldn’t be a trip up north without stopping at Tobie’s. I’ve never had a “world famous caramel roll,” but I do quite enjoy the maple long johns.

Tomorrow my wife leaves for Cabo San Lucas, Mexico to shoot a destination wedding. She rocks.

In a couple days I’m taking a few days off and heading up north–the great white north. Am I crazy?! While Ali’s snorkeling, I’ll be strapping on the snowshoes and shoving hand warmers into my socks.

I’ve built up some comp time and have decided to make a break for some solitude. I love my job and the ministry with my students, but I’ve been exhausted. There have been many weeks lately with 0 or 1 day off. Ick! I’ve always highly valued a healthy balance of work and well…not work. And shortly after I realized I’d spent more hours in church than I care to count, I discerned I needed some time away.

I’m going to be a hermit for a weekend. Really! I’ve found a place up in northern Wisconsin that lets you rent out this teeny cabin in the woods where one can be alone and un-bothered by cell phones, email, tv, and work responsibilities. I always approach times away like this with a certain degree of anxious anticipation. I get pretty excited imagining how God might show up in the silence.

And while I’m engaged in the great man vs. winter battle that rages on here in the upper midwest, Ali will be soaking up the 80 + degree sunshine. Which perhaps for her, is just as therapeutic.
